Have You Met Henbit Yet?

I have a question for you.

Have you ever looked out across a field, a roadside, or even your own backyard and noticed what looks like a soft purple blanket covering the ground?

If you’re like most people, you probably thought it was just another weed.

I know I did.

But as I’ve been learning more about herbalism, I’ve started paying closer attention to the plants growing around me. And one of the plants that seems to show up everywhere in the spring is Henbit.

The funny thing is, once you learn to recognize it, you start seeing it everywhere.

And I mean everywhere.

Henbit (Lamium amplexicaule)

is a member of the mint family and is one of the first plants to emerge as winter begins to fade into spring.

It has soft green leaves, square stems, and beautiful little pink-purple flowers that seem to appear overnight.

The upper leaves wrap around the stem, which is one of the easiest ways to identify it.

For many people, Henbit is simply a lawn weed.

For herbalists, it’s a reminder that nature often provides nourishment exactly when we need it.

A Plant With a Purpose

Henbit has traditionally been used as a nourishing spring herb and wild edible.

While it isn’t considered one of the stronger medicinal herbs, it has been appreciated for its nutritional value and gentle support.

Henbit contains vitamins, minerals, and plant compounds that can contribute to overall wellness.

As I continue my herbalism journey, plants like Henbit remind me that learning herbs isn’t always about finding something new.

Sometimes it’s about learning to see what has been there all along.
