Plantain: The Herb That Draws, Soothes, and Restores

Hey girl hey,

Some herbs don’t need attention to work…

they just show up, do the work, and restore what’s been irritated.

Plantain is that herb.

Often overlooked, growing right beneath our feet—
but deeply powerful in how it draws, soothes, and heals.

Let’s get into her.

Plantago major (and its cousin Plantago lanceolata) is a common wild herb known for its ability to support skin healing and pull impurities from the body.

This is the herb that shows up when the skin is:

  • Irritated

  • Bitten

  • Inflamed

  • Congested

Plantain is known as a drawing herb, meaning it helps:

  • Pull out toxins, splinters, and impurities

  • Soothe bug bites and stings

  • Calm inflamed or reactive skin

  • Support wound healing

Plantain supports:

  • Anti-inflammatory response

  • Antimicrobial protection

  • Tissue repair + regeneration

  • Moisture support for dry or damaged skin

It doesn’t force healing—
it creates the conditions for the skin to settle and restore itself.

One of the ways I learned how to use Plantain was via a fresh poultice.

Here is the traditional way Plantain was and still is used today:

  • Pick a clean leaf

  • Crush or chew it to release juices

  • Apply directly to the skin

  • Cover and leave in place

Used for:

  • Bug bites

  • Minor cuts

  • Skin irritation

Plantain teaches us healing doesn’t have to be complicated.

Sometimes it’s about removing what doesn’t belong…
soothing what’s irritated…
and letting the body do what it already knows how to do. Plantain is definitely on the shelf in my apothecary and I also have it categorized as one of my “herbal first aid” herbs.

So sis, what do you think would you add this herb to your apothecary ?

No, on second thought, I don’t think you need to think about this herb because this herb right here is a staple for everyone/s home.

If you don’t have any I would definitely suggest you purchase some ASAP.

Here’s a link to two of our herbal partners where you can purchase the herb: Mountain Rose Herbs and StarWest Botanicals.
